BUILD
iPhone XS Max was the largest smartphone Apple had ever built upon its release (well it was overpowered with the likes of iPhone 11 and iPhone 12, especially iPhone 12 Pro Max). As much as it has the same design as iPhone X, Its build can be best described as deceptive. Immediately upon picking it up you will notice that the rounded sides make it feel thick besides its build passing off as lightweight at first. The device is slightly shorter and narrow than that of the iPhone 8 Plus which comes with a big screen.
Quite impressively is the fact that the phone manages to squeeze a whopping 6.5-inch display in the small body that is even narrower than the iPhone 8 Plus which has a 5.5-inch display. The steel frame that sits around the outside, as well as the new formulation of glass on the front-rear, is tougher than what was seen on iPhone X and ends up giving it a premium look.
Well, we guess the iPhone 6S and iPhone SE were the last duos that carried a headphone jack along with them as the iPhone XS Max lacks the same but it, fortunately, comes with a pair of Apple Ear pods that have a lightning connector in the box. (You can further upgrade your ear pods to some more comfortable AirPods.
The power key is placed on the right side while the volume buttons are placed below the physical mute switch on the left-hand side. The SIM card tray is placed below this key and includes a new eSIM embedded inside the handset. Holding down the power key will bring up Siri. Worth mentioning is the newly introduced gold finish for the phone which is a little more subtle as compared to the gold variant of iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus.
6.5 INCH OLED DISPLAY
The only thing that sets iPhone XS Max apart from iPhone XS is the screen which extends to 6.5 inches as compared to the 5.8 inches that were seen on the latter. The screen size can also be compared to Samsung Galaxy Note 9 with 6.4 inches.
The OLED Panel that makes up the Super Retina HD display is bright and colorful and features a 2688×1242 resolution. These pixels indicate a sharp display with images and texts being shown clearly. Apple also claims that the display on this device and that of the iPhone XS have a 60%improved dynamic as compared to iPhone X thus they make videos and pictures appear more vivid.
Super Retina XDR display gives you a premium user experience as it displays crisp and detailed images with very smooth edges and fine print. Due to higher resolution and pixel you get more display information for better web browsing experience, e-book reading, and video content consumption.
The true-tone feature will automatically adjust the white balance based on the ambient light. It has a 90Hz refresh rate making your animations smooth and fluid. Dark mode makes your general user interface and Apps dark to protect you from the harmful blue light at night to make your experience less straining and immersive. There is You also get HDR10, Dolby Vision, and a wide color gamut just to upgrade your phone’s display.
FACE ID
Simple as ABC is the Face ID feature. You simply pick up your device to wake the screen or just hit the power button and as you swipe up the unlock button, the face Id will have already done its thing. This is the biometric option for the iPhone XS Max as it replaces the fingerprint sensor which is seen in the likes of iPhone 7 Plus.
IMPRESSIVE AUDIO
It should feel like a party with the hyped-up upgraded speakers from the iPhone XS Max. Sound has been made wider as the speakers are tuned to fire sound directly at each ear. There is a deeper rumble and the sound quality is impressive. Pair this up with some Airpods and you can have more fun watching your movies, listening to your music, and playing games with an able speaker.
iOS 12 PERFORMANCE
Just as what we saw in iPhone XS, this device also runs iOS 12 which is upgradable to iOS 14 (featured in iPhone 12). which has aesthetically appealing widgets and displays along with a beautiful lock screen. There is also a Home Kit App that offers a seamless connection between the App and your home appliances provided that they are smart. Emojis have been made larger in size and the stickers are bigger.
Messaging will be much fun with emojis that best explain your idea and bring out humor. Siri has been made the best personal assistance not only can you ask her normal questions but also request her to access third-party Apps.
A12 BIONIC CHIP
There is a lot to say about the A12 Bionic chip but let’s just summarize it to being 40% more structured and 50% more powerful than that of the A11 Bionic chipset which is seen in phones such as iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X.It is powered by a powerful Apple A12 Bionic (7 nm) chipset and an able Hexa-core (2×2.5 GHz Vortex + 4×1.6 GHz Tempest). This will enable you to perform heavy-duty tasks such as gaming. You can enjoy feeding in your social media accounts without lags and overheating. It is battery efficient. Replying to emails, browsing, gaming, streaming, and watching your videos can be done easily.
CAMERA
iPhone XS Max appears to have a similar camera to that of the iPhone X. The rear part hosts dual 12 MP snappers that are aligned in a vertical stack and are separated with a Quad-LED True Tone flash. Both the iPhone XS Max and iPhone XS have the Smart HDR feature which is improved over the HDR on the iPhone X. It improves shots while having high contrast and ensuring all areas of photos are well lit and detailed.
In daylight, wide camera photos have rich details, impressively low noise, and excellent dynamic range. The colors are accurate and vibrant. The contrast is great and the images are sharp. In good lighting, portraits have great details and color. Subject separation is great and background separation is excellent. The telephoto camera gives you a 2x optical zoom for you to get closer to your subject no matter how far they are and capture enough details.
Selfie time will be a good time as the device is equipped with a single 7MP selfie camera that has face detection, HDR, FaceTime over Wi-Fi, or Cellular data. The colors are great with a decent dynamic range. Portraits are also appealing and can be posted on Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, and can also be shared with loved ones. Photos take you places that your legs can’t. Travel the world with amazing photos that will tell the tale. You can also take slowfies (slow-Mo selfie videos) at 1080 pixels. It can record up to 1080pixels@30fps video footage for casual use.
BATTERY
We know battery life has always been a matter of controversy when it comes to iPhones but let’s give a thumbs up to the 3174mAh battery in iPhone XS Max. Thanks to the newer A12 Bionic chip that is also seen in iPhone XR a, battery life is extended making the phone to be more power-efficient. The 3174 mAh battery outdoes the iPhone 8 Plus which had 2691mAh. It can take you throughout the whole day even while under heavy tasks and gaming.
